Dry eye disease is a multifactorial disease that comprises of many different components. Meibomian Gland Dysfunction is a condition where the glands that produce the top layer of your tear film become blocked. When the top layer of the tear film is compromised the tears evaporate, this is called Dry Eye. When the glands become blocked this leads to increased bacteria, leading to increased inflammation.
Intense Pulse Light was initially introduced in advanced Dermatology to treat numerous skin conditions. It has since been proven effective in treating various Dry eye conditions. This method uses brief powerful bursts of light at specific nanometre wavelengths to target change in blood vessels near the surface of the tear film. IPL works by these blood vessels absorbing heat, this mechanism is similar to hot compressing, enabling the pores of the glands to open up. A practitioner will then express the gland to remove the blocking matter. This application has resulted in improved symptoms such as less dryness, decreased use of lubricating eye drops, decrease in redness and foreign body sensation.
