Glaucoma Treatment

Technology, Risks and Benefits

How do we treat Glaucoma?

Glaucoma in most cases is a chronic condition that cannot be cured. It requires a long-term team approach to slow the progression of the disease. There are several options available to treat glaucoma, including laser treatments, medical management and surgical correction. Ask your doctor which option is the best for you at your next consultation.

What technology is used in the treatment of Glaucoma?

Zeiss forum is a proprietary software program which allows us to accurately track and assess any changes in your eye, these changes are demonstrated on OCT, colour photographs of the optic nerve, or on visual field assessment. The glaucoma workplace function allows refined analytics to help assess and track any changes in your eye. This advanced technology allowing us to stay in complete control of the management of your Glaucoma.

What are the risks of Glaucoma treatment, if any?

Generally glaucoma treatments are low risk. At NQ Eye Specialists we adopt a minimally invasive approach to glaucoma wherever possible. It is important however to remember that Glaucoma can never be cured so ongoing vigilance is paramount. Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

What are the benefits of Glaucoma treatment?

Glaucoma treatments don’t improve your vision. They are designed to prevent you from losing vision. When intraocular pressure is maintained within the appropriate levels (different for everyone) you slow progression of the disease and improve your chances of maintaining your current level of vision. Importantly though, glaucoma and cataract often co-exist. Treatments for cataract can be combined with glaucoma treatments and in this scenario we do aim to improve your vision.
